Tiny House Skirting

April 12, 2015

It’s spring! And we removed our skirting. So while we were at it we thought we’d answer a few questions about skirting for the winter.
A little skirting lesson in reverse!  By Ryan  🙂

We took the skirting off because we’re moving! Otherwise it can stay on during the summer (although the campground we’re at requires it off in the open season).

We think we remember the cost for the supplies being $200+. $13/sheet of insulation (we used 5 sheets for our 24 foot long trailer), plus electric heat tape at $34/roll (we used 4, 20 foot long rolls), duct tape, tin tape, and two heat lamps.

There’s a more permanant option, Duraskirt, which we had on for the show (something they supplied). It’s cost is over $1,000 and is not meant to be used and re-used. We kept it to try to use once we’re in a more permanent location but it was measured for the ground we were on before… maybe it’ll work? It’s very heavy (when considering moving it from place to place), and is cement -which requires a cement cutting saw or something for fitting. But it looks really nice! It has a pretty permanent/settled look.  (I think I might prefer to leave the fancy wheels exposed!)

So if you’re wondering about living in a Tiny House in the winter I hope you found this helpful! We made it our first winter in Minnesota’s extreme cold temps! If you have further questions throw ’em down in a comment and we’ll do our best!

      Lol! 🙂
We actually don’t even know yet where we’ll be moving! But certainly around June. Ryan will be starting a new position (He’s movin’ on up!) somewhere! Somewhere amazing I’m sure!
I’ll update when we’re ready to share more!
      Thanks so much Charleen! <3

    Hey Kim!

My husband and I are building a tiny home this summer in HASTINGS, mn! We would love to hear about how you heat/cool your house in the winter and summer! 🙂 We were looking at the Mr.Slim from Mitsubishi but we are nervous that it would keep up with the -30 degree temps in MN winter!

    Any advice would be helpful!

    Thank you!!!!

Hi Marey! 🙂 I’ve never heard of the Mr. Slim. We’re using the Kimberly Wood Stove. It works wonderfully and is great for off-gridding (no electric or propane! Yea!). We don’t have anything to report on for cooling in the summer. We’ve hooked small fans to the kitty-cat walk railing for air circulation. Wind moves through easily with all the windows! We might put in a Kilmaire heat pump thing that provides air conditioning as well. 🙂

Hey Kim!! Thank you so much! we have been reading reviews of different appliances and some of them dont heat as well after the temp drops below -25C. and in MN thats very common– but we could always use a little space heater need be right?! Thank you so much for your help!

Yes, that’s what I read too (especially about the Kilmaire, which we don’t intend to use for heat). We use a space heater too. Usually, space heater in the morning and wood stove in the afternoon/evening/night. (We’re on-grid right now :)) And it cooks! 🙂
